Quebec Harfangs win 1st Confederation Cup

2019-10-27

WOOT WOOT! The Quebec Harfangs are the 2019 TNFF Champions!

The Quebec Harfangs have defeated the Toronto Maroons 43-35 to win the 2019 Confederation Cup, the team's first championship. It's been a long climb to the top for one of the TNFF's founding franchises, which started life as the Oshawa Admirals in 2004. The Admirals/Harfangs missed the playoffs five times in their first eight seasons of play, but in the following eight seasons, sat out just once. In the franchise's first twelve seasons they only made the finals one time, losing 2013's Confederation Cup X (CC10), but have now competed in three of the past four championship games, including the past two in a row. A long, slow climb it may have been, but a steady one that's finally found the Harfangs at the summit, clutching their first Confederation Cup.

The 2019 Confederation Cup MVP is Quebec Harfang kicker Brett Lauther. In a tight game where Quebec's combined offensive and defensive point total was 25 and Toronto's combined offensive and defensive point total was 26, special teams were the deciding factor. The Maroons earned a total of six points from their punter and kick returner while the Harfangs earned a total of five points at those positions, leaving the match to be decided by the kickers. Through the first 18 weeks of CFL play, the Maroons' kicker Sean Whyte led that league with the most field goals, 46, the highest kicking percentage, 90.2, and the most kicking points, 168. Harfangs kicker Brett Lauther was near the bottom of the CFL's kicking stats with 24 field goals, a kicking percentage of 82.8, and 95 kicking points, but he had kicked the longest field goal of the year, at 57 yards. Despite the Maroons' apparent advantage at the kicking position, however, it was the Harfangs who came out ahead as Whyte unpredictably missed one of his two field goal attempts and Lauther successfully connected on all four of his. The Offensive Player of the Game is Quebec receiver Brandon Banks, who contributed 11 points, based on a touchdown and 116 receiving yards. Our Defensive Player of the Game is Toronto Maroon Mike Edem. Edem earned 7 points on 3 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 safety, with 19 points scored against his CFL team.

Congratulations @officeglenn on a well-deserved first Confederation Cup championship!
